FUCK YEAH NERVOUS SYSTEM

This image shows details of the spinal cord. Cajal’s patient investigation revealed the elaborate organization of the fibers that course between the spine and brain. The top image is a lateral view of the spinal cord; along the left, motor nerves connect to muscles, and along the right, a sensory nerve (red) snakes down to the skin.
The bottom image is a cross section showing motor cells (black) in the spinal cord.

Head and neck
A midline section of the head and neck, displaying the elements of the brain and its extension into the spinal cord. The oral and nasal cavities and the palate and tongue are shown in relationship to the pharynx, larynx and esophagus.

Multiple sclerosis; myelin stain of spinal cord
There is a large lesion of multiple sclerosis in this section of cervical spinal cord, forming a broad band of demyelination extending from the lateral column on the left through the major portion of both posterior columns into the lateral column on the right. Note three things in particular: 1) myelin in the areas affected is virtually totally destroyed; 2) involvement is asymmetrical; and 3) gray matter is involved (myelin in gray matter is destroyed, while neurons remain intact).

Spinal surgery. Close-up of an exposed spinal cord (centre) with screws on either side. Metal retractors are used to hold back the patient’s skin and flesh, providing the surgeons with access to the spine. [source]

Embryo spinal cord. Coloured light micrograph of a section through the spinal cord of a 6-week-old human embryo. This spinal cord precursor is known as the neural tube.
The central canal (white) is surrounded by structures that will form the grey matter of the central nervous system.  The pale pink region around these features will become white matter. The red regions are somites, structures that form skin, muscle and vertebrae (backbones).

Spinal cord. Light micrograph of a cross-section through the human spinal cord. The spinal cord consists of a butterfly-shaped core (brown) known as grey matter, which consists of nerve cells. Surrounding the grey matter is a larger region of white matter, made up of myelinated nerve fibre bundles or tracts.
The cord extends from the stem of the brain to vertebrae of the lower back; 31 pairs of nerves arise along its length, carrying information to and from the brain and body.
