FUCK YEAH NERVOUS SYSTEM

26 Jun 2011

“Your worst enemy, he reflected, was your nervous system. At any moment the tension inside you was liable to translate itself into some visible symptom.”
— George Orwell, 1984 (via parlezvousfrenchie)

Multiple sclerosis; myelin stain of spinal cord
There is a large lesion of multiple sclerosis in this section of cervical spinal cord, forming a broad band of demyelination extending from the lateral column on the left through the major portion of both posterior columns into the lateral column on the right. Note three things in particular: 1) myelin in the areas affected is virtually totally destroyed; 2) involvement is asymmetrical; and 3) gray matter is involved (myelin in gray matter is destroyed, while neurons remain intact).

Sagittal section through a 16 week old female foetus, revealing the internal organs. At this stage it measures around 14 centimetres from head to rump. The brain (white) is surrounded by the still soft bones of the skull. The spinal cord runs from the brain, down through the vertebrae of the backbone. [source]
