“I chose to embroider the EEG waves of each sleep stage (including “awake”) onto a pillowcase to demonstrate that sleep is not merely a passive, automatic behavior composed of a single chunk of time, but a complex series of physiological stages that occur every night in our brains and bodies. When you lay your head to rest on your pillow, you don’t simply pass into a simple single void known as “sleep” — your body and brain progress through various states, each with unique identifiable features. The pillowcase is meant to be a fun reminder of this.”
